GILLES CORMIER
DALHOUSIE, NB.
Born in Robertville, New Brunswick, Gilles Cormier currently lives in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. A multidisciplinary artist, he has explored many artistic paths. His passion for wood sculpture led him to take woodcarving courses in Maine, USA. His work as a set designer in community theatre also contributed to his artistic development, allowing him to explore perspective, color, and techniques that he later integrated into his painting practice.
Over time, he has pursued various art-related training, including stained glass making, advanced illustration workshops, oil painting, acrylic and watercolor courses, wood sculpture, and a cabinetmaking apprenticeship. He has also worked as an illustrator for children's books.
Cormier is a member of the Association acadienne des artistes professionnels du Nouveau-Brunswick as well as several other cultural organizations. He has led many illustration and painting workshops in schools across New Brunswick.
He has participated in group exhibitions and has shown his work in various locations in New Brunswick, as well as in Normandy (France) and the Quebec City region. He also took part in the BDC Symposium in Campbellton in 2017 and 2018, where he won the People’s Choice Award.
Gilles Cormier has contributed to numerous public art projects. In 2025, he participated in Les Fondateurs public art project in Bois Joli; in 2024, in Banc public – Hommage aux Premières Nations on the cycling trail in Campbellton; and in 2012, in Francophonie en Harmonie / Driftwood Sculpture, to name a few.
For him, artistic experimentation is a continual source of wonder and inspiration. Exploring new techniques and mediums is an essential part of his creative process.
Themes from everyday life, his environment, wildlife and flora—everything becomes a potential source of creation for this artist. In his paintings, he explores contrasts of vivid colors and circular movements, allowing him to create effects of space and depth.
