ATLANTIC VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL

29th EDITION

“Imagination is a tree.” - Gaston Bachelard

The 29th edition of FAVA will take place from June 6 to 8, 2025, at the Carrefour de la mer in Caraquet,
under the theme World Tree.

What would we be without trees? Trees, those impressive, silent, and motionless living beings that help sustain life on this planet. These trees produce oxygen, feed us with their fruits and berries, provide us with shelter, and protect birds, animals, insects, plants, and microorganisms beneath their canopy; biodiversity as a whole. What would we be without trees?

The tree, represented as a symbol of balance, of life in constant evolution, is present in several cultures around the world – we find it painted by artists, carved in wood by artisans, embroidered on quilts, stylized as a company logo, etc. The tree, by its deployment in space, is a figure that has been a source of inspiration in several fields: we find it in mechanics (camshafts) in the field of computing (tree structure) and in so many others fields. The tree symbol is also used in the field of psychology, including a projective test created in 1952 by psychologist Charles Koch. This allows us to observe an individual's personality traits through their drawing of a tree.

The notion of the World Tree is present in several mythologies - an archetypal figure representing the existence of a cosmic tree connecting the different parts of the Universe.

GODFATHER

GARRY SANIPASS

Photo garry_sanipass_2025_winter_catapul

It is with great pleasure that we welcome this year, as GODFATHER of the 29th edition of FAVA, the painter and performer Garry Sanipass, originally from the TJIPOGTOTJG (Mik'maq) First Nation of Bouctouche, New Brunswick.

Garry Sanipass is an Indigenous artist whose journey began in childhood as a means of escape and self-expression. As the only dark-skinned, non-French-speaking boy in his elementary school, he faced constant isolation and bullying. Unable to communicate with peers, he found solace in drawing, where he discovered a profound need to communicate visually. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s multidisciplinary genius and later captivated by Andrew Wyeth’s ethereal egg tempera portraits, he dedicated himself to mastering drawing through relentless practice and experimentation.

His artistic path deepened through Indigenous teachings and ceremonies, including the transformative Sundance ritual, where he encountered the Trickster spirit. These spiritual experiences shaped his creative process, fostering a fascination with subconscious imagery and archetypal storytelling. The guiding principle of interconnectedness, taught through the teachings of “all my relations”, remains central to his work, reflected in themes that honour nature, community, and cyclical transformation.

After studying graphic design at McKenzie College in 2006, he gained a deeper understanding of composition and visual storytelling. This revelation opened new possibilities, blending classical artistry with contemporary techniques. A pivotal moment came during a painting session with his granddaughter, where a simple exercise in blending colours liberated him from a lifelong fear of colour, leading to a joyful exploration of pigments and egg tempera.

Currently, Garry Sanipass is experimenting with creating pigments from natural sources, further deepening his relationship with the land. His evolving body of work continues to explore themes of transformation, interconnectedness, and the balance between permanence and impermanence, inviting viewers to journey with a layered and symbolic artistic narrative.

LIVE CREATIONS

THE TREES AND IT'S REVERIES

As part of The Tree and its Reveries creative project initiated by FAVA, the following artists were invited to create a work on this theme, which has, from a certain angle, an aura of magical realism.

Trees live in community, creating a welcoming habitat for many species of plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms.

The imagination finds in the tree a precious structure, anchored in the ground and reaching for the sky; a sensitive structure carrying light and shadow. The tree is a fascinating subject, and also an essential element in maintaining biodiversity in natural living environments.

The Tree and its Reveries theme will thus take shape through a variety of techniques, including paper and cardboard molding, 3D photography, and painting combined with various fibers.

As part of The Tree and its Reveries project, participating artists will create a live work using a technique they have mastered, but incorporating paper.

The L'arbre et ses rêveries podcast is also available to learn more about the artistic proposals of the artists taking part in this project.

NICOLE HACHÉ

Artist Nicole Haché will give a presentation on her exhibition Samares on Saturday June 7 at 11am in the Café Piet Mondrian at Carrefour de la mer in Caraquet.

Nicole Haché establishes a solid intellectual and sensual contact with this material that obsesses her, triggering in her the primordial ideas that she will gradually develop until obtaining a personal and engaging artistic product. Haché'snatural sense of regulated structure presents itself beforehand: she sees, she finds, she recovers, she moves, she archives her possessions, her materials. The artworks are born later, following a long reflection on the inborn nature of the components of her art. Increased contact with organic materials is evident, and Haché explores the physical and structural relationships existing at many levels within this nature.

Samares, the title given to Nicole Haché's entire project during her residency in La Baie des Chaleurs, inhabiting the inland sea in July 2024, was born of a fortunate encounter with several ancestral maple trees once planted in front of the Caraquet Town Hall. Due to their ageing, these trees were cut down and replaced by other species grown in greenhouses. On a rainy day in May 2024, Haché asked the people in charge if she could collect materials from what remained of the trees, scattered here and there on the lawn.

Her collection gives way to an inventory of trunks, branches, young shoots and samaras - the winged seeds characteristic of the maple tree. Methodical care is required: materials are classified, analyzed according to their essence and their potential for activation once transposed into the exhibition room. In this way, Haché seeks to insert the essence of the tree - and, by extension, of nature - into a humanized context, where a rigorously orchestrated visual presentation deconstructs the tree into its essential components, rendering it meaningful through a system of categories and descriptive sets of the vanished “nature” that once was.

The felling sparked a strong reaction among the population, revealing the deep attachment we have to these vegetal beings anchored in our daily lives. This collective emotion led the artist to question the scope of this emotional bond, and to explore the relationship between the urban tree and the native tree. Why do we give more importance to the tree that shares our living space that we come across every day than to the one rooted in a natural ecosystem, often invisible to city dwellers? Through a sculptural assemblage of maple branches - emblems of the urban tree - and stoloniferous dogwoods - symbols of indigenous flora - the artist establishes a visual and symbolic dialogue. This relationship underlines the tensions and complementarities between domesticated and native nature, questioning our emotional hierarchy in relation to living things.

Here we witness a phenomenon that highlights the material control made possible by the artist's almost obsessive commitment and devotion to a nature that then becomes eternally malleable.

IMAGINATION IS A TREE

3D Drawing Workshop

When the philosopher Gaston Bachelard said that imagination is a tree, what did he mean?  A visual art workshop that's both playful and a little philosophical, sure to appeal to children, who are invited to imagine a tree using a 3D technique while pondering philosopher Gaston Bachelard's proposition that imagination is a tree. In the first part of the workshop, the artist will show children a few simple techniques that will then enable them to create a highly creative tree drawing. The imagination is a Tree workshop is designed for children in grades 4 to 6, the artist will adapt the workshop to suit the age of the children or young participants. Painter and illustrator Noah Poirier will lead this workshop on the theme of trees. Five workshops will be offered at Caraquet's Marguerite Bourgeoys school for different age groups.
